The vara was an ancient unit of length primarily used in Spain, Portugal, and their respective areas of influence. A vara was three feet, but the foot wasn't the same everywhere, as its measurement varied by location, thus making the vara also different. Let's see some examples. The vara of Teruel measured 76.8 cm, being the shortest. The vara of Alicante was 83.59 cm. The most used was the vara of Burgos, also known as the Castilian vara, which measured 83.59 cm. Observe, the Alicante vara 83.59 cm, the Burgos vara a little larger, 83.59 cm. That is, five millionths of a meter more. The longest vara is the one from Cuba, and it has a very curious history. Merchants used their own varas that were compared to a standard unit, and government representatives could verify the accuracy of the varas used by merchants to prevent fraud. It circulates on the internet that a Cuban governor asked Madrid to send him a standard vara, and they did. But the case in which they packaged the vara was so well made that they took the case for the unit of measure. That's why the Cuban vara is the largest of all, because it was the length of the vara plus the case. One day the case fell and opened, and then they realized that the genuine vara was inside. That's what circulates on the internet, but I haven't been able to verify the story. Let's say that the Cuban vara is the largest, but we don't know why.
