Hydrogen deposits 2024-10-17

Today I am going to talk about hydrogen deposits. A few years ago, a friend who was a European parliamentarian asked me to give my opinion on the work done by an engineering student about hydrogen. It discussed this gas as an energy source. I mentioned that oil or coal were energy sources because they are extracted and when burned they give us energy, but hydrogen was not, as it does not exist in nature. Hydrogen has to be created and to do so, more energy is consumed than it can then provide us. Therefore, hydrogen was not an energy source; at most, it was a vector, that is, something that serves to transport energy, but not a source. Fortunately, I was wrong. Hydrogen is indeed obtained from nature. There are hydrogen deposits. What happens is that until very recently, these deposits were considered insignificant and could never play an important role. But it turns out that large deposits of this gas have been discovered. The first found in Europe is located in the province of Huesca. This gas is generated by the interaction between water and iron at depths where oxygen does not reach. This process, which takes place permanently inside the Earth, and is therefore renewable, is called serpentinization. It is estimated that the deposit in Huesca could provide slightly more than a million tons of gas. Each kilogram of hydrogen provides 33.3 kilowatt hours. In comparison, gasoline only provides 12 kilowatt hours, that is, one third. The existence of natural and renewable hydrogen deposits completely changes the rules of the game. Perhaps hydrogen is indeed an energy source. Perhaps hydrogen should be taken into account in the future.
